Only 20 minutes drive from Faro airport, the resort is around three
times the size of Monaco. Leisure facilities include two magnificent
18-hole championship golf courses and a Tennis Academy with 14
courts.
Vale do Lobo also has its own two kilometre sandy beachfront, with
an extensive choice of restaurants, bars and shops. Vale do Lobo has
the feeling of an exclusive self-contained community. Everything you
need is close at hand - from the onsite bank, post office and
supermarket to the resort’s own doctor and security service.
Founded in 1962 by Trusthouse Forte plc and Costain plc, Vale do
Lobo was the first development in the Algarve.
At that time, the Algarve was mainly inhabited by farmers and
fishermen. It was only after the establishment of Vale do Lobo, its
five star Le Meridien Hotel Dona Filipa and the first golf course,
that Faro International Airport was opened.
Whilst looking for a holiday home in the mid 1970s, Sander van
Gelder, a Dutch entrepreneur, discovered Vale do Lobo. In 1977 he
purchased the resort and 30 years later, Vale do Lobo became a
mature, 400 hectare resort, attracting residents and visitors from
all over Europe by its self-contained community, quality properties
and excellent facilities and services.
At the end of 2006, the resort was sold to a group of Portuguese and
international investors, including the largest national bank Caixa
Geral de Depósitos. Diogo Gaspar Ferreira became the Chief
Executive. A new era for the resort began:
This financial reinforcement will allow Vale do Lobo to guarantee
its high quality service and develop its concept even further over
decades to come. The initiation of a €500 million investment
programme for the development of the Oceano Clube (Vale do Lobo II)
and Vale Real (Vale do Lobo III) areas are among the resort's
current projects.
At the beginning of 2008, Vale do Lobo unveiled a sleek new
corporate image and rebranding as part of its future plans for
international expansion.
With continuing investment and improvement over the years, Vale do
Lobo has maintained its position as one of the foremost resorts in
Europe, and is today the largest luxury resort of its kind in
Portugal to be operated by the same company.
